SRINAGAR, Nov 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's package for the Kashmiri Pandits hit its first roadblock today as some members of the Kashmiri Pandit community carried out demonstration against the apathy from people at helm in appointing the Kashmiri Pandit youth under the PM's package in Kashmir valley.
The Kashmiri Pandit youth assembled here at the Pratap Park and raised protest against the 'half-hearted' steps of the central and state governments' vis-à-vis appointment of Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir valley under the package announced seven years back in 2008. The protesters were detained by the police and lodged in Kothi Bagh police station.
The protesters staged a protest so as to highlight the shortcomings of the PM package that according to them has not been implemented in letter and spirit. They accused the central government of merely quoting figures while doing nothing on ground to appoint Kashmiri Pandit youth in Kashmir and giving them the basic facilities.
"The Prime Minister's Return and Rehabilitation package for Kashmiri migrants was announced long back in 2008 as a step towards rehabilitation of unemployed KP youth in Kashmir Valley. However, due to pathetic handling by successive governments has resulted in complete failure of the scheme since the government could not fulfill its commitments," said the protesters.
The protesters said that under this package the government had claimed to rehabilitate a total number of 75,000 migrant families back to valley. The protesters said the harsh reality is that during the last eight years the government could not even rehabilitate 2,000 Kashmir Pandit youth who had volunteered to serve in Kashmir valley.
"Not even 5 percent f the whole package has been implemented so far for which Rs. 16.18 crores and then Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 2,000 crores package was sanctioned by the GOI. The incompetence of the successive governments is highlighted by the fact that since 2008 out of the sanctioned 6,000 jobs only some 2,000 youth have been recruited. The remaining 4,000 posts have been left unfilled," said the protesters.
The protesters said out of 2,000 employees only 800 employees have been provided accommodation, that too on sharing basis. They said these employees are living away from their families and it becomes very difficult for them to maintain social relation with their families and relatives.
The protesters served an ultimatum upon the central and state governments that if the immediate and genuine needs are not addressed within 30 days they will be forced to start direct action programme. It was decided to call all employees back to Jammu working under PM's package in different parts of the valley.
During the protest programme a resolution was passed which stated the 'lackadaisical' approach of the government in proper implementation of the PM's Return and Rehabilitation package of Kashmiri Pandits has completely put this scheme off-track. This has resulted into a situation under which the Kashmiri Pandit employees recruited under the said package in Kashmir valley are facing lot of unavoidable hardships and circumstances.
