Kupwara encounter enters 15th day

KUPWARA, Nov 27: Fresh exchange of fire took place between security forces and militants for the 15th consecutive day in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday. However no casualty was reported till the last reports came in.
A senior police official said that, after receiving a tip off regarding presence of militants in the area a joint team of Army's 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) 4 Para commandos and SOG launched a massive search operation in Manigah village of the frontier district near Line of Control (LoC).
The official said that the contact was established at Chornard forests in Hajinaka area at around 8:00 am today.
Fresh firing has been reported from the Manigah forests this morning between security forces and the militants holed up there, The fire exchange lasted a little over 30 minutes, the official told Early Times.
The official said, "The area was under lockdown for past three weeks with army and Para commandos searching for the hiding militants who gave a slip to the forces on three occasions in a week's time. We have called an additional reinforcement, so that this time militants could not escape from the area," official added.
It is worthy to mention here that, a Lt Colonel, commanding officer (CO) of 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR)was killed in the operation, while another officer was among the several injured since security forces launched an operation to flush out a heavily armed group of militants believed to be hiding in the Manigah forests on November 13.
During the encounter in past week, an unidentified militant has also killed in the constant exchange of fire.
Pertinently, three foreign militants of JeM militant outfit were killed in a firefight near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar area Kupwara district on Nov 25.
Meanwhile the search operation was in progress in the area, while as no casualty was reported till the last reports came in.
