KUPWARA, Nov 28: A land owner turned contractor forced students of primary standard to take their classes under open sky as the newly constructed school building under SSA has been turned into Cowshed cum kitchen shed in Educational Zone of Rajwar of Handwara town in this North Kashmir district.
Sources said that students of Government Primary School, Rainawari Kruhama in Rajwar area were forced to study in open sky after the owner of the building locked the school.
A local resident Ghulam Mohammad Rather said that he was promised by the concerned authorities that he will be given a government job in turn if he could provide a piece of land free of cost so that school building could be constructed there.
Sources said that much to his surprise the job of cook cum sweeper was given to someone else, due to which he didn't handed over the building to the school authorities and forced the students to take their classes in open sky.
The much awaited three room school building for Primary students was constructed in 2003 under SSA scheme at Kruhama Rajwar at a cost of Rs 4.40 lakh, which is being used as cowshed while as another one room building (Additional Class Room) was also constructed at the cost of Rs 4.55 lakh, said sources.
"The landowner turned contractor dragged primary standard students out of the school. The landowner cited the reason for not being employed by the concerned authorities as he was promised that two members of his family would be provided job of sweeper and cook, which they failed to do so," said sources.
Zonal Education Officer Rajwar, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Dar said that students of GPS Rainawari Kruhama were harassed in his presence by the landowner due to which students were compelled to sit on roads.
"Despite the intervention of some respectable citizen, the land owner did not budge prompting me to file a case against him in police station Rajwar," said ZEO.
When contacted Chief Education Officer (CEO) Kupwara, Farooq Ahmad Dar said that the department is trying to persuade the land owner and hopefully the matter will be resolved with a day or two. He said the senior citizens of the area have been taken into confidence who have assured that they will persuade the landowner to open up the new school building for the children at the earliest.
