Old traffic signals in disarray, JMC invites tender for more
5/22/2016 11:23:59 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 22: With traffic signals installed at 30 intersections in jammu city five years back facing neglect and apathy, JMC is in the process of inviting 34 new traffic lights for regulating traffic in Jammu city.
Eventhough Traffic lights are standard means of traffic regulation across the world, they failed miserably to deliver in Jammu due to their poor functioning, impatience and complete lack of traffic sense.
Sources divulge that the contract of installation of Traffic Lights was awarded to a Delhi based company M/s Onnyx Electronics in year 2011 along with maintenance contract for 8 years. But the present condition of traffic signals is very pathetic and most of the signals are not working. The Company (M/s Onnyx) responsible for maintenance and upkeep of these signals is not paying any attention towards the repair and maintenance of faulty signals thereby causing lot of inconveniences to the commuters and pedestrians in the city of Jammu.
Sources disclosed that the traffic lights were installed compromising major clauses of the tender like installation of cameras and power back up in each traffic signal thereby causing more confusion on roads rather than regulating traffic. Sources also disclosed that while better companies with better product had participated in the tender process, but they were deliberately ignored to grant contract to the blue eyed company.
Recently Jammu Municipal Corporation has come up with a new tender for installation of traffic signals at 34 new junctions along with up-gradation of 30 old signals. The signals installed in year 2011 were of such inferior technology that there is a need to upgrade them only after 4 years of operation.
Experts believe that with increasing vehicular traffic on Jammu roads, it has become imperative to install vehicle accentuated traffic lights in the city so that the movement of traffic can be monitored remotely for better and effective regulation.
