Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 22: Scorching heat of summer coupled with power and water crisis have added to the woes of Jammuites for over a fortnight. With government totally sleeping over the issue, no end is visible to the power and water crisis in Jammu region where the heat wave has already added to the miseries of the people.
The PDD is almost in a mess. Two days back, half of Jammu city was plunged into complete darkness as power remained off from 8 pm to 11 pm due to a technical snag at Gladni. After the power was restored, it played a hide and seek for entire night and also remained off for two hours next morning from 4 am to 6 am, causing problems to Jammuites.
PDD authorities said some fault had occurred at Gladni and it would take some time to repair it. Power remained off for five hours on the May 19 night. Jammuites have witnessed long power cuts almost every year in the month of May.
The long power cuts and the PHE daily wagers' strike have also affected drinking water supply in many localities.
According to sources, PDD authorities were totally sleeping over the issue and the promises made by coalition government of improving power supply system had not been fulfilled.
Jammuites hold deputy chief minister, who holds the power portfolio, responsible for the present mess in PDD. "While he is enjoying Kashmir's cool environs, people in Jammu have been left at the mercy of God," they remarked.
No steps were taken to improve the power situation in the state even during the erstwhile NC-Congress government which was headed by Omar Abdullah. "Though people have now pinned hopes in this government, it too seems to be sailing in the same boat," official sources said.
Had it not been so, the deputy chief minister would have convened a high level meeting to discuss ways for improvement of power supply to Jammu region in view of the scorching heat.
"The government, which is in office for over an year has not taken any concrete steps in improving the power supply, especially in Jammu region, where consumption is more than Valley in summers. People have been listening for over a decade that Gladni and other grid stations, like Janipur and receiving station of Muthi, develop snags during summers due to the heating of wires and transformers. However, no measures have so far been suggested to overcome these problems. Old and worn wires and low-capacity transformers need to be replaced by the new ones," sources said.
The problem of power crisis is not only confined to Jammu city, but in the rural belts of Samba , Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Reasi, Doda and Kishtwar districts, people are forced to face over 14 hour long power cuts.
A demonstration was held on Residency Road by the residents of Mohalla Darogaran against power crisis in the locality.
The protests are also being held almost daily in different areas of Kathua, Samba and Udhampur against the irregular power supply.
