BJP's power sharing may spell doom for it in next assembly polls | Behind The Veil | | Earfly Times Report
Jammu, June 25: Though the PDP has every reason to feel happy and satisfied over the victory of Mehbooba from Anantnag by poll, the state unit of the BJP seems to be more excited. The reason for excitement among BJP leaders is the result of assured survival of the coalition Government which ensures survival of the BJP's first time power sharing experience in the state. No doubt the PDP rightly had suggested to the BJP to keep away from pre-poll campaign in Anantnag constituency and that could have been one of the reasons for Mehbooba's win despite the fact that she was challenged by seven candidates ,especially two from the National Conference and the Congress.Still the BJP is happy over Mehbooba's win.Is this happiness the outcome of success the BJP achieved in ensuring support from a majority of 20,000 voters belonging to the displaced Pandit community ? Nothing can be said at this stage. But even the BJP led NDA Government is happy on the ground that Jammu and Kashmir is not a lost state for the BJP. Had Mehbooba lost the election she would have lost the Chief Minister's post because as member of the Lok Sabha she had to get elected to either the State Assembly or to the Legislative Council. She could have easily found berth in the Council but she,as a daring politician, chose a difficult path by contesting the election from Anantnag constituency from where her father Mufti Mohd.Sayeed had been elected to the Assembly in 2014 election.Well her loss would have been an end to the coalition Government and no other constitutional provision was available except for holding a fresh election. And no major mainstream political party had been prepared and interested in contesting a fresh Assembly election within a span of six months. The PDP and the BJP had not performed to the expectations of people with the result the BJP has fears of a rout in the region of Jammu and PDP has fears that it may not win 25 seats from the valley. The Congress and the National Conference had fears similar to the one experienced by the BJP and the PDP. As far as the vote bank and political standing are concerned the PDP has not suffered as major an erosion as the BJP has suffered .The reason being many issues. The BJP,despite the fact is holding the power portfolio it has not been able to provide uninterrupted power supply to Jammu region and that too in the summer months. The BJP has not been able to fulfill its commitment of granting citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan and it has not been able to do away with Article 370.The coalition Government surrendered before separatists as far as the old industrial policy and return and rehabilitation was concerned. Under the Industrial policy non-state subjects were to be given land on lease for setting up industries but this idea has been abandoned under pressure from the separatists. Again the Government has surrendered before the separatists as it has tentatively decided to abandon the plan to establish separate colonies for Pandits. And those in the Jammu region hold the BJP also responsible for this surrender. Had the BJP opposed the move the party could have halted severe erosion in its vote bank in the Jammu region. This way the BJP leadership is happy that the party is sharing power with the PDP but it does not know that this power sharing has proved an Achille's heel for it. Let the BJP enjoy power sharing and by the time the next election is held the BJP may not have any major representation in the state Assembly.
