Winter like weather in Kashmir as mercury witness drop due to rain

Srinagar, Aug 28: Winter like weather conditions prevailed as mercury witnessed considerable drop due to rain in the Kashmir valley, where people remained confined in their homes for the 51st day today due to curfew and restrictions imposed by the authorities and strike called by separatists in protest against the killing of 70 persons and injuries to about 6000 others in security forces firing.
It is said in Kashmir valley that after the annual Amarnath yatra, which ended on August 18, weather changes in the Kashmir valley. The water level in river Jehlum and its tributaries has also witnessed increase during the past few days though it was still. However, a number of roads and localities were water lodged due to faulty drainage system in Srinagar, where there is almost no activities due to curfew in the down town and Shehar-e-Khas and strike elsewhere. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will wet in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region till September 3. However, in Ladakh region wet weather will continue till August 30 before turning dry from next day. People in the Kashmir valley, particularly in the upper reaches and near forests were wearing warm cloths, including "Pharan" due to cold after maximum temperature witnessed considerable drop due to heavy rains. In summer capital, Srinagar, people were seen wearing sweaters and wind shields though majority remained indoor due to strike and restrictions. Met spokesman said the maximum temperature yesterday witnessed a major drop and settled at 22.9 degree, six notches below normal after 5.2 mm rainfall. However, the minimum temperature 15.8 degree was near normal. He said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 24 degree, again below normal and 16 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. Power supply to many areas was disrupted for hours last night due to strong winds and heavy rain. Rain since this morning has also affected Dish service in Srinagar, where a number of roads were under water though there was no traffic and pedestrian movement due to strike. World famous health resort of Pahalgam received highest 13.7 mm rainfall followed by Anantnag 8.8 mm, Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir 6.2 mm and Kupwara 4.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours. It was still raining at most places in the valley. Met spokesman said there could be light rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperatures at winter capital, Jammu would be around 29 degree and 25 degree respectively during the next 24 hours. There is possibility of light rain and maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 25 degree and 17 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh in Ladakh region.
