Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 11: It is an age of information technology. No one can hide the truth and the fact and the information is getting disseminated in no time across the word. In fact, the information technology has brought the whole of the word in one's lobby or any other room of the house. And then there is hardly any shop whose owner doesn't ensure to install a TV set so that he remains aware of the minute to minute development taking place around him, across the nation and across the world. And then the internet and the mobile phones, the google, the twitter and the faceBook. Leave aside newspapers. The fact of the matter is that one can know anything, anywhere and at anytime.
But still there are some who sometimes commit serious blunders wittingly or unwittingly. And Jammu and Kashmiris perhaps the one state which has fallen to victims of those who pass on wrong information to the nation, nay to the world and the result the things become more complex and sometimes irritating and humiliating.
It is hardly necessary to point out that most of those who write and comment on Jammu and Kashmir use the word Kashmir rather loosely ignoring its dangerous ramifications. However, this is not the issue under reference today. The issue under reference is the over three-month-long unrest in Kashmir.
It was on July 8 that the security forces lawfully liquidated Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. His killing was exploited by Pakistan and its Kashmir-based agents such as Geelani, Mirwaiz, Malik and so on. Ever since then,Kashmir has been in turmoil. A number of demonstrators have lost their lives. Hundreds have suffered injuries. The number of security forces personnel, who also suffered injuries, is more as compared to the number of Kashmiri demonstrators who suffered injuries. A few jawans also lost their precious lives. The situation continues to remain far from normal
The need of the time was to put things in perspective and present a true story of facts to the suffering nation, but it was not to be. Many sought to feed the nation with wrong information and it was former National Security Advisor MK Narayanan, who crossed all the lines and went to suggest that whole of the state remained under curfew for 70 days, which was not true.
The other day, he, among other things, said: "The Almost a hundred days of a daily diet of violence, more than seventy days of curfew across the State, very high figures of individuals killed and injured, including security personnel, all point to an extraordinary situation. No evidence has surfaced that the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) or the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) are involved in the violence, though Hizbul Mujahideen cadres are present in sizeable numbers. The vast majority of those involved in the agitation are, to all intents and purposes, 'unattached'. Many come from the ranks of the educated unemployed. Some of the agitators are hardly ten or twelve".
While he did make a valid comment on the situation as it obtained in Kashmir, he committed a big mistake by asserting that the entire state remained under curfew for 70 days. It was Kashmir which remained under curfew for 70 days and there are still certain localities in Srinagar where the security is very tight. As far as Jammu and Ladakh were concerned, there were peaceful. Ladakh didn't remain under curfew even for a moment. As for Jammu province, Rajouri town, Banihal and a few places in Doda did remain under curfew for a coupe of days. The causes were mostly local.
MK Narayan is not an ordinary man. He is fully aware of the nature of danger facing India. He should not make sweeping statements because his words carry weight.
