Pampore encounter enters third day, one militant killed so far

SRINAGAR, Oct 11: One militant is reported to have been killed in the encounter that is going on between militants and security forces at the Entrepren-eurship Development Institute (EDI) at Pampore in the outskirts of summer capital. One or two militants continue to be holed up inside the EDI building.
Reports said that a militant was killed when the army personnel launched an all out attack against the militants in the evening today. While one militant was killed there are inputs that two other militants continue to be holed up. The death of militant is yet to be confirmed officially and as such his identity also has not been established as yet.
Reports said that since morning today security forces fired scores of mortar shells and rockets towards the EDI building in order to kill the militants. The militants did not retaliate and they did not respond to the mortar shelling. The same continued till evening and following this there were inputs that a militant has been killed in the operation so far.
There are reports that security forces fired at least 40 rockets towards the EDI building in order to flush out the militants. The security forces have not stormed the EDI building fearing that they might suffer casualties as such. The security forces have decided to adopt a wait and watch policy and as such are waiting for the right time before the militants are neutralized.
It would be in place to mention here that at about 6:30 AM on Monday two to three militants fired some shots near the EDI building to create panic in the area and immediately took shelter in the top most storey of EDI building. Since then the encounter has been going between the two sides and for the last 40 hours now gunfire is going on in the area.
Sources said that the militants used a boat to reach the EDI building following which they fired some shots towards the security forces personnel. Pertinent to mention here that river Jhelum flows in the backyard of EDI building. Some of the localities are also located on the bank of river Jhelum.
Pertinent to mention here an army man sustained injuries in the initial gun burst on Monday. After this a policeman was also injured in the shootout. The militants took refuge in the EDI building and fired at the security forces at regular intervals. The gun shots broke the calm of the area and the sound of gun shots rattled the entire area as well. The army soldier injured has been identified as Naik Rohit Roy from 311 Gorkha Regiment.
It would be in place to mention here that one of the buildings of EDI was gutted during a gunfight between militants and security forces in February this year. Nine persons including three militants and three security forces were killed in the gunfight at that time and the two sides traded fire for more than 48 hours.
This time around the militants have taken refuge in a building that is located parallel to the gutted building. The seven storied state of the art building has suffered huge damages and the building has gone up in flames. Army used IEDs and rockets to blast the building. Militants also fired upon the fire tender that was rushed to douse the flames in the building.
The EDI building is located in the Sempora-Pampore area on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. It is located in the South Kashmir's Pulwama district in the outskirts of summer capital of the state. The EDI building is placed at a strategic location and there is proper security at the entrance of the building. Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel are always posted on the highway that runs parallel to the EDI buildings.
