Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 15: Although all formalities for upcoming biotech park project in Jammu region stand cleared, the Science and Technology minister finds himself in a tight corner in the wake of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's remarks on IIM Jammu.
Last year, Government of India had approved two projects of biotech park project, one each for Kashmir and Jammu regions. Accordingly, the divisional administration of Jammu took the matter seriously and did all the spade work, clearing the decks to take into hand the work of construction in Kathua district.
"The land identified for the project in Srinagar got stuck in acquisition issues while in Jammu region the land which was identified in Kathua district got all clearances and with this the concerned Member of Parliament and Union Minister took interest for early initiation of construction. But at the same time the state minister felt uneasiness because the same project sanctioned for Srinagar could not be cleared from its early stage," sources informed.
Feeling insecure with the brewing anger among the people of Kashmir on regional biases, the minister is reluctant to show activeness in executing the project, sources said.
They said the approval for the project was given last year by the Union Ministry of Science & Technology, Department of Biotechnology, and there was some hassle regarding the land clearance for which the Union Ministry of Environment was approached and guidelines were suitably modified. "Now the project is through for construction at a budget of around Rs 100 crore in the first phase which is expected to be completed in a period of 18 months, following which this first ever biotech park of the region will become functional."
Sources said the park in would help catalyze development of the region by augmenting revenues, increasing employment opportunities and promoting industrial culture as well as agricultural productivity.
