| ATM is not automated teller machines for Kashmiris but it is Any Time Maaz (mutton) | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 15: Even during the height of turmoil and violence people in Kashmir have not lost their sense of humour. ATM is no longer for them (Automated Teller Machine) because during the shutdowns all the banks remained shut and the ATMs could not be operated.
What then is ATM for the people of Kashmir? It is "Any Time Maaz (mutton)" Since Kashmiris are fond of rice and mutton hartal or no hartal they have to devise methods for making mutton and rice available. Well each household in Kashmir does store rice and wheat atta but Mutton is a rare commodity during the shutdowns.
A new way was devised under which mini trucks would act as mobile mutton shops for which the name given to it was Any Time Maaz. These mini trucks or vans would travel in lanes and bylanes and people would wait for it. Neither the seller nor the driver had to shout for arrival of mutton. In fact people waited for these vans.
And people in Kashmir is possibly the only race in the world that eat all parts of lamb's body. Well Muslim would avoid consuming testicles and this would be compensated by the Kashmiri Pandits before they migrated to the plains.See a Kashmiri eating tongues of lambs, feet of lamb and in fact they prepare soup out of these feet and lower legs.
And the separatists have realized by now that average Kashmiri is fond of eating, fond of having delicacies. That is the reason for the separatists to allow shops to remain open, transporters and traders doing business between 5 PM and 7 AM. This is the new calendar to be followed till October 20.
One has to wait for new calenders and one may not find any restriction or call for shutdown in the late evenings. This way the grocer, the butcher and the vegetable seller may take rest during the day to be fit to make "Maaz" and other items available during the period of relaxation.
There used to be time when the Government would impose restrictions, give relaxation for two hours or three hours during which people would throng the markets and buy eatables.This duty has been taken over by the separatists whose shops run on calls for shutdowns and for relaxation. Instead of emulating the Government by imposing curfew restrictions these separatists impose shutdowns. The impact is the same because separatists use militants to enforce their restrictions, enforce their shutowns and those who defy it are bound to be killed by the militants.
And the PDP claims that the situation in the state is improving. It pins its hopes on the return of people to some border villages which they had deserted following series of ceasefire violations. Nothing can be said about the situation showing signs of improvement. It depends on Pakistan.
May be Pakistan is trying to throw a bait. Its troops have stopped ceasefire violations to target houses of civilians to force killings.
Or the truce can be genuine after India signed 400 dollar anti-missile defence deal with Russia. This may have forced Islamabad to have some rethinking about promoting cordial ties with India when already the US and the UN have mounted pressure on Pakistan to abandon its war hysteria and opt for dialogue with India. |
