Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 17: Repeated incidents of weapon snatching from security personnel, especially cops of the state police in Kashmir have raised many eyebrows and questions are being raised on their training and alertness and also on the role of few moles in the organization.
The frequency of the incidents of weapon snatching has been disturbing and a closer look on the umpteen incidents that have taken place in last one year reveal that in almost all the incidents, the weapons were snatched from the cops of the J&K Police only.
The disturbing series of such incidents that has now left the police red faced started when Naseer Ahmad Pandit, a constable posted at the residence of Altaf Bukhari, a Minister in the PDP-BJP coalition government, decamped with his service rifle in March 2015. He later joined Hizbul Mujahideen and was later seen in a picture with militant commander Burhan Wani.
On December 25 a constable and Personal Security Officer (PSO) of another politician, went missing with four service rifles and two of his friends. Although the friends - Gazi Ahmad Dar and Aaqib Ahmad Dar - were arrested, he still remains at large and has possibly joined militancy.
This incident triggered a series of such misadventures by the terrorists as the follow up action by the police administration was lukewarm. There was distinct rise in the incidents of weapon snatching there on, embarrassing the Police and giving the terrorists shot in their arm.
On September 8, terrorists had barged into the guardroom of National Conference leader Abdul Rashid Khanday in Begom village of south Kashmir's Kulgam district and snatched four rifles. Police later suspended four officials for cowardice and dereliction of duty. This was the third incident of weapon snatching by militants this month. On Sunday evening, militants barged into the house of PDP's district president, Advocate Javid Ahmad Sheikh, at Dialgam village in south Kashmir's Anantnag and decamped with four assault rifles.
On March 8, two weapons were snatched from cops, On April 15, Lashkar's operational commander attacked security guard of a NC leader and succeeded in decamping with the weapons, On July 22, weapons stolen from cops in religious place at Pulwama, on August 1, suspected militants snatched an automatic weapon from a judge's personal security officer in the Qamarwari locality of Srinagar. On August 4, militants made an abortive bid to loot the weapon of policemen posted on duty in Pulwama.
The incident that took place on Monday last was a classic case of either cowardice or switching of loyalty in fovour of militants. According to official sources, militants dressed in army uniform stormed a police picket guarding a TV tower in Dooru of Anantnag district and decamped with five service rifles of the cops posted there, a police official said on Monday. "He said the ultras decamped with three SLR rifles, one carbine rifle and one INSAS rifle snatched from the cops of the India Reserve Police at the tower.
"There is need to investigate the conspiracy angle as it is difficult to snatch rifles from all five people posted at a guard" said a retired senior police officer in Jammu.
