Early Times Report

Jammu, June 3: Even as the people of Jammu had initially shown the way to tackle Covid19 by maintaining minimal cases through strict adherence to lockdown and social distancing norms, a sudden surge in the number of cases in the winter capital region has set the alarm bells ringing.
In the last around a fortnight, there have been numerous instances when the number of cases reported from Jammu exceeded those reported from Kashmir.
On May 25, Jammu witnessed a shocking surge in the number of cases.
On the fateful day out of the 47 cases which tested positive, as many as 21 were from the Jammu district alone. Prior to that 33 cases were reported from Jammu and 14 from Kashmir. But before this, the Jammu district had been showing the way of tackling the Covid19 in an exemplary way for having minimal or even no cases at some point of time. Health experts said the divisional administration of Jammu province in general and the administration of the winter capital in particular will need to beef up presence on the ground to flatten the curve which has been going high and erratic.
“Door to door testing in affected areas needs to be beefed up as also the sanitization of such areas,” said a health expert working with the Government Medical College Jammu.
Moreover, he said, the testing facilities in Jammu need to be geared up.
“At the moment Jammu conducts less tests than Kashmir and the proof lies in the fact that around five hundred tests samples from the winter capital are regularly send to summer capital for testing,” said a senior official in the Health Department on the condition of anonymity.
The health experts cautioned the administration of thinking twice before lowering the guard in Jammu as relaxations are expected from June 8.
“There’s a need to hold consultations with the health experts and other stakeholders before the reopening in phased manner because after having remained almost Covid19 free, Jammu city in particular is witnessing alarming signs of rise in cases and this something which cannot be ignored,” the health experts said.
Meanwhile the residents of Jammu have appealed Lieutenant Governor LG Murmu to personally monitor the emerging situation in Jammu province in general and the winter capital in particular.
