EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Sept 17: With Jammu region seeing a surge in COVID-19 positive cases, Convenor, United Democratic Alliance, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajiv Mahajan urged Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to remain vigilant and take strong measures to contain the virus spread in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Rajiv Mahajan said, “Focused testing of elderly and comorbid persons who are at high risk would help identify persons for early admission and bring down death rate.” Appreciating Lieutenant Governor Sinha’s decision to implement the World Bank-assisted project for strengthening of health care institutions in J&K, Rajiv urged him to personally monitor the project to provide equipment for intensive care units/operation theatres, laboratories and power back up systems at the district level as there is nothing see on ground level as one of the premier hospital in Jammu lack all equipment particularly availability of oxygen and ventilators.
With a spike in coronavirus infections, he asked LG to consider again impose lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir for four more weeks in a bid to curb the spread of the disease.
“Besides the lockdown, some strictest measures will be taken to check the spread of coronavirus,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir is one of the states further worse off because for a population of 1.25 crore, there are around 180 ventilators in the Union Territory’s hospitals, he said adding that almost all are occupied by the patients at all times, rarely leaving any space for COVID-19 patients if the need arises.
“If the virus spreads with high speed in Jammu and Kashmir, our health system is in poor state. We are not in a position to deal with any eventuality and there will be a crisis situation,” he said.
Asking the central and UT government to revoke the decision of partial reopening of schools from September 21, he said “The Jammu and Kashmir has recently seen a spike in COVID numbers and we don’t want to risk it by sending children to school.”
