| PM, Sonia nuke the deal to save government | | | | New Delhi | Oct 12
There will be no no early elections to the Lok Sabha, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today, setting at rest speculation generated by sharp differences with the Left on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Singh, architect of the controversial deal, went a step further and said that failure to carry it through would not not be "the end of life".
In the clearest indication yet that the Congress party was unwilling to sacrifice the government in the cause of the deal, Gandhi said that the Left parties, which were opposing the deal, were not being "unreasonable" and that the government was not not looking for a confrontation with them because that was not not the "coalition dharma".
"Elections are still far away. The government has still one and half years to go to complete its term. I hope and expect we will stay the course," the Prime Minister said at an interaction at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today indicated the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle soon, saying more opportunities will be given to young MPs in the government.
Talking at the 'Hindustan Times Leadership summit' here on Friday she said she is absolutely determined that after the exercise in the party, more opportunities will be given to younger people in the exercise in the government. "I hope that it will be possible quite soon," she added.
Earlier, she rejected the idea of early elections. She said Congress does not want confrontation with the Left, wants to understand their position on the nuclear deal.
"Confrontation is not coalition dharma," she said.

City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh on Saturday said the police was probing the reported similarities between Thursday's Ajmer Sharif Dargah Blasts and the May 18 explosions in Mecca Masjid here.
''There are some similarities and all things are being probed,'' Singh said here.
When asked about reports which said similar explosives (packed in lunchboxes) were used (in both the incidents) and SIM cards found at the blast sites, he said ''it is not good to comment on the matter without full details.''
Meanwhile, a police team from Rajasthan headed by a DIG reached here today to look into the city's possible 'links' with the Ajmer incident.

Security forces shot dead a self-styled battalion commander of Lashkar-E-Toiba (LET) in Handwara area of Kupwara district on Saturday, police said.
On a tip-off police, assisted by 30 Rashtriya Rifles, launched an operation at Shatagund Payeen in Handwara which was followed by an encounter in which one self-styled battalion commander of LeT was eliminated, superintendent of police Hasseb Mughal said.
The slain commander identified as Faisal alias Abu Osama of Pakistan provided logistic support to the militant organizations and sent infiltrating militants to Rajwar, Mawar, Kandi, Natnusa and Qaziabad areas of North Kashmir, Mughal added.

A pilgrim was found dead under suspicious circumstances near the holy town of Katra of Jammu and Kashmir, police said here today.
Sukhvinder Singh (25), a resident of Pathankote in Punjab, was found dead at Moori, three km from Katra, last evening, police added.
Sukhvinder had returned from the Vaishno Devi holy cave after paying his obeisance yesterday, police said, adding that his body was sent for a post-mortem.
