| No regional discrimination: Sun shines equally at Jammu, Srinagar | | | | Early Times Reporter
Jammu | Feb 9
After a weeklong of mayhem and disaster, the sun finally shined back. Interestingly, unlike our political establishment, the sun did not do any regional discrimination –for a while it was quite a sunny afternoon both in Srinagar and Jammu as also in many other parts of the region.
Though the chill still maintains but the temperature too slightly improved today. "We had respite after seven days of snowfall today (Saturday) as the clouds parted, bringing on the sun in Kashmir", said T.K. Jotshi, assistant director with the weather department.
'Fair weather conditions are going to continue for at least three days. Because of clear night skies, the minimum temperature, which had risen because of the cloud cover, has again started falling. It was minus three degrees Celsius in Srinagar today,' said Jotshi.
Jotshi also warned of more snow avalanches in the higher reaches of the valley.
Meanwhile, the death toll in avalanches and roof collapses across the state has risen to 19. The civil administration has sought the assistance of the Indian Army ...

However, as sun made an appearance in the skies, the Minister boarded sorties to know well being of their constituencies.
According to an official spokesman, "on the instructions of the Chief Minister several teams of ministers visited the affected areas in the State today".
Minister for R&B, Jugal Kishore and Minister of State, Aijaz Ahmad Khana along with MLA Bani...
| | | | Experimenting over ‘police commissioners’; will it succeed? | | | | Early Times Reporter
Jammu | Feb 8
Will the experiment on appointing police commissioners for the cities of Jammu and Srinagar succeed? This question has assumed significance following reports that senior bureaucrats in the civil administration and senior police functionaries oppose the move.
The experiments in other states has proved successful only after the governments in those states were determined to experiment with the appointment of police commissioners. Official sources said that the Director General Police,Mr Kuldeep Khoda, mooted the proposal only after he had felt convinced that the scheme will prove fruitful in improving the law and order machinery.

Jammu | Feb 9
Wrapping his words in the political delicacies, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has very politely told the Pahari speaking people to wait little for their Scheduled Tribe demand.
The reasons were obvious. The Chief Minister was apparently in no mood to take cudgels with the communities as he gears to face elections later this year. Any commitment to the Pahari speaking people could upset the apple cart of Gujjars who do not want any one else to be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes.
The Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain, who is a Pahari himself, also told his brethren that neither the occasion is opportune nor the approach appropriate...

Jammu | Feb 9
For entire judiciary of the country the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir was today a center for attraction as the Chief Justice of India was here to address the valedictory function of the Lok Adalat week. However, simultaneously, there was also a note of discord as the Bar Association stayed away from the mega function which was also attended by the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
