WE ARE READY TO FACE ELECTIONS: OMAR
3/1/2007 11:47:32 PM
Jammu, March 01 Terming PDP sloganeering on issues related to security a mere ‘dramatic act’ ahead of looming assembly polls , National Conference chief Omar Abdullah on Thursday blasted PDP leadership for staying mum while they were in office and not voicing their concern over the presence of security forces and draconian laws in the state. Bowling bouncers one after the other targeting Mufti Mohd Sayeed and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Omar who was addressing party workers here at She-e Kashmiri bhawan thundered on top of his voice, “Why you were silent for three years when you were chairing meetings of unified high command in the capacity of chief minister. Did you ever ask army top brass to recall troops from Kashmir valley during these meetings," Omar said raising question marks over the genuineness of their claims at this juncture. Referring to boycott of cabinet meeting by PDP minister son Wednesday evening, Omar said," You have no right to continue in the government if you are not ready to attend cabinet meetings. It is better you pull out of the coalition ...

Spotlights on Taliban's one-legged commander
3/1/2007 11:38:05 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI, MARCH 1: A highly sensational piece of information has just poured into Indian capital from across the border: A deal has been brought about without any fanfare between the Pakistani establishment and the Taliban. It has been through Mullah Dadullah, a leading Taliban commander. The deal is reportedly designed to extend Islamabad's influence into southwestern Afghanistan. If a set of inputs from across the border were to be believed, one-legged Mullah Dadullah will be Pakistan's strongman in a corridor from the Afghan provinces of Zabul, Urzgan, Kandahar and Helmand across the border into Pakistan's Balochistan province. And these inputs suggest that the Taliban, u...

2007-08 Union Budget for the poor?
3/1/2007 11:36:06 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI, MARCH 1: The BJP-led Opposition NDA has acted swiftly to portray the rival UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh in dismal colours. Encouraged and emboldened by the defeat of the ruling Congress party in the just-concluded Assembly polls in Punjab and Uttarakhand, the BJP and its allies in States and at the national level have chosen the Union Budget for 2007-08 as the propaganda vehicle against the UPA government. The two ruling economists, Manmohan Singh and Finace Minister, P Chidambaram, may differ with each other on some issues. But this time the two seem united on one thing--that is, to insist on the 'pro-poor' content in the Union Budget, which was prese...

Unavoidable is Armed Forces' modernisation
3/1/2007 11:34:54 PM
BL KAK NEW DELHI, MARCH 1 UPA government's announcement in Parliament on Wednesday vis-a-vis a hike in the defence budget for 2007-08 has, on expected lines, received due coverage in the world press, too. But the increase in the defence spending is unlikely to speed up the modernisation of one of the world's largest militaries. It is already an open secret that New Delhi, the developing world's biggest buyer of arms, has a shopping list of fighter jets, helicopters, cargo planes, missiles, radars, naval patrol aircraft and artillery for its 1.3 million-strong force. However, the latest increase in funding was roughly in line with inflation and defence analysts said that spending had ...
