NEW DELHI: Gen. Parvez Musharraf's move culminating in the freedom of as many as 1,300 women prisoners has sparked public debate in Pakistan. Gen. Musharraf's purpose seems to be meant to herald a new era for Pakistan.
However, some Pakistan-watchers are of the view that this measure yet again promises to be little more than lip service in a country where the government's administration has weakened, the law enforcing mechanisms, including the lower courts, are reputedly corrupt, and like so many other areas of progress, here too, improvements in the lives of a few women have failed to trickle down to the majority.

The dispute between the two South Asian neighbours arose early this year after India got the aromatic super Basmati variety under its geographical Indication (GI) laws.

In plain language, Sonia's party has just been forced to move into damage control mode. This follows an embarrassing U-turn on privatisation, which triggered rumours that the Prime Minister was quitting. Rumours were set afloat amid noises, though subdued, of tussles bet... | |
