EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU/SRINAGAR, JULY 3 In a reflection of intolerance to the free expression of views, the copies of EARLY TIMES newspaper were today consigned to fire following a protest demonstration in the summer capital Srinagar. The unfortunate incident threatening the freedom of expression took place in the heart of Srinagar City as some people took offence to an analytical report carried by this newspaper. The EARLY TIMES in its August 3 edition had made a brief analysis of the trial of film star Sanjay Dutt and a former militant Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate. Bitta Karate being tried for attempt to murder and destroying evidence was acquitted by the designated court the same day when Sanjay Dutt was released. Thus the story was a comment on the conduct of prosecution and not on the individual character of any person, even though the society is aware of all the facts. Jammu, Aug 03 People in large number came on roads in Gool area of district Udhampur in protest against the alleged rape of a twenty-two year old woman by two Special Police Officers, who were caught and handed over to police by the local people. Reports said that two SPOs entered into the house of Mir Qasim, late last night, and caught hold of his wife, who was reportedly alone in the house. The cops, who were also allegedly carrying their official weapons, sexually assaulted the woman, who succeeded in raising an alarm.
