| Centre may not allow J&K to directly handle relief package due to trust deficit | | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Sept 17: A section of the political leadership of Jammu and Kashmir is of the opinion that the Centre may not give the relief package for the flood disaster directly to the state government because of a major trust deficit.
In confidential discussions, these political leaders admit that the state does not have an effective mechanism for carrying the benefits to the sufferers. Also, there is every likelihood of the relief money's diversion to various departments of the state administration, they feel.
The colossal damage caused to public and private property is becoming visible in Kashmir. It is clear to even a passerby that Jammu and Kashmir will require both extensive and intensive rehabilitation efforts to cope with the devastation caused by the flood. The question is, if the Centre has a trust deficit vis-à-vis the current state leadership, how will the relief package be made available to the state?

JAMMU, Sept 17: When Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited the state on September 5 to take stock of the flood situation, he disclosed that the Centre has provided Rs 1,100 crore to the state as natural calamity fund. Singh had stated that the state should immediately utilize that grant for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people.
On his visit the next day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that in addition to the Rs 1,100 crore already provided to the state by the Centre as natural calamity fund, the Centre would initially provide an additional Rs 1,000 crore to the state.
