| Centre may not allow J&K to directly handle relief package due to trust deficit | | | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Sept 17: A section of the political leadership of Jammu and Kashmir is of the opinion that the Centre may not give the relief package for the flood disaster directly to the state government because of a major trust deficit.
In confidential discussions, these political leaders admit that the state does not have an effective mechanism for carrying the benefits to the sufferers. Also, there is every likelihood of the relief money's diversion to various departments of the state administration, they feel.
The colossal damage caused to public and private property is becoming visible in Kashmir. It is clear to even a passerby that Jammu and Kashmir will require both extensive and intensive rehabilitation efforts to cope with the devastation caused by the flood. The question is, if the Centre has a trust deficit vis-à-vis the current state leadership, how will the relief package be made available to the state?
Some political leaders raise the valid point that when the state government is already in saddle, how can the Centre take charge of relief and rehabilitatio...

Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, Sept 17: Ever since the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) scored a landslide victory in Lok Sabha polls and managed to clinch three parliamentary seats from J&K, several 'wannabe' politicians joined the state unit of the BJP with a hope of making a mark in politics.
However, the new entrants in their over enthusiasm sometimes forget that they have to abide party discipline viz-a-viz follow certain set procedures and guidelines.
But, there are few high profile individuals, who till less than a month back were unknown faces and nowhere in the picture, think otherwise since they are acting as if they have spent a lifetime in the saffron brigade.
One such fresh face makin...

JAMMU, Sept 17: Despite the historic performance of BJP in the 2014 general elections, the dismal show put up by it in its first electoral test since its landslide win in May, is a cause of worry for its "think tanks". The results of bypolls held across 10 states can effectively be called a wake-up call for the party.
Having put up such a poor show in the bypolls, the party was also unlikely to achieve the target of 44+ seats to form its own government in J&K.
The bypoll results have come up as a setback for BJP at the national level and are being seen as a test of prime minister Narendra Modi's popularity. These are also a cause of worry for BJP president Amit Shah as the...

Jammu, Sept 17: Despite claims of sanitation campaigns, a visit to the emergency wing of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) and its stinking toilets exposes the insensitivity of the administration towards cleanliness.
The condition of toilet in the emergency wing is pathetic and it was impossible even to stand there for a while.
The toilets are overflowing with sewage and filthy water and foul smell emanating from there made it difficult for patients. The leaking pipes, dysfunctional faucets and stinking toilets gave testimony of the administration's neglect.
Patients and their attendants are facing tough time particularly in the emergency ward due to poor ma...
