Jammu, Jan 27: President's Police Medal for meritorious services to Senior Superintendent of Police Shailender Singh, 1999 batch KPS batch has raised many eye-brows because it was same officer- who was at the helm of the affairs when body of hero of Amarnath land agitation martyr Kuldeep Verma was humiliated by the cops.
Singh, who is blue-eyed boy of a senior Congress leader, was in-charge officer of the area where Verma's body was humiliated by the cops.
On July 23, 2008, Kuldeep Verma ended his life by consuming poison at the dharna venue of Sangarsh Samiti at Parade Chowk against statement of Omar Abdulllah, who had opposed to give even a single inch of land to the pilgrims of holy cave of Amarnath. On the very next day massive anti-administration protests rocked Jammu as police attempted to cremate the body of Verma before sunrise in Bishnah allegedly using liquor and tyres. Humiliation with body of Kuldeep Verma had triggered fresh protests and an indefinite bandh began in the Jammu region.
Interestingly Singh has been awarded with this prestigious medal for his "outstanding record in extending long arm of law against the criminals when he was SP HQ Jammu". |
