Let NC first decide what exactly it wants
Airing Different Views

Rustam
JAMMU, Sept 13: NC supremo and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah says one thing and his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his brother and party additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal, another. They are, in fact, pulling in different directions, thus becoming objects of ridicule and losing their credibility, if any. Farooq Abdullah says don't ask me questions about the State, as he is a Union Minister. Ask me questions about the country, he says. He also says New Delhi would neither grant autonomy to the State nor would revoke or withdraw the AFSPA from it. It would take a century to realize these goals, he says. He, in addition, ridicules the Hurriyat leadership and tells them that New Delhi will not request them to come forward and join dialogue process to discuss the issues they want to discuss. It is for the Hurriyat leadership to take the initiative, he unequivocally says. He even goes to the extent of asserting that Jammu and Kashmir will remain an integral part of India and no power on earth can grab from India even an inch of its territory. These are some of his very recently statements, coupled with emphatic assertions.
The views of Farooq Abdullah do not fit in the Chief Minister's scheme of things. Nor are they consistent with the views his brother air on a daily basis. Both the Chief Minister and the NC additional general secretary are airing totally different views. They are urging New Delhi to withdraw the AFSPA at least from those areas where the situation is peaceful. There is no demand for wholesale withdrawal of the AFSPA, they say, adding what they want is that the peaceful areas do not require the Army presence anymore and that it is time for the troops to go back to the barracks, as they have done the job. The Chief Minister is even accusing the Army top brass of playing a negative role in this regard.
Only recently, the Chief Minister said: "I never suggested that the AFSPA will be removed from Jammu and Kashmir in one shot. My logic is: look, there are certain areas where the Army is not conducting anti-insurgency operations. There you can safely hand over the charge to the State police and the CRPF. But we hit a roadblock. The senior brass of the Army is being overly conservative. I need to convince them and I am working on that. The process of withdrawal of the AFSPA will start under my rule itself, as he is committed to revoking it".
As for the NC additional general secretary, only the other day, he demanded revocation of the AFSPA from peaceful areas of the State. "The Army has done a good job. But now is the time for them to go back to barracks as peace has returned. Additional troops should be sent back to the barracks as we see a considerable change in the overall situation in the State. Revocation of the AFSPA is the need of the hour and it should be revoked from peaceful areas," he had on Tuesday said.
The three Abdullahs need to sit up and decide what they want. They cannot make contradictory statements on the same issues. They need to speak in one voice. However, one has to give some credit to Farooq Abdullah who has, it seems, realized that the NC has been striving to achieve the unachievable. Only a Kashmiri leader like Farooq Abdullah can make such statements as he made during the past 6-7 days and that too in Jammu and Kashmir.
