Lift socio-economic siege on Kargil: Bukhari | | | Early Times Report KARGIL, Sept 24: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stressed on need for opening up of Kargil-Skardu for its better socio-economic development as the area has been denied its right because of political reasons and difficult topography. Addressing party workers at Kargil, while terming Zojilla tunnel a vital component of interconnectivity that will usher better economic opportunities for the people of this region, party senior leader Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari recalled that it was during the PDP brief tenure that the tunnel across Zojilla got sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme. He said the work on the tunnel should be taken up both from Gumri, Minmarag and Gagangir ends. He said there was a need also to make it mandatory for the executing agencies to give priority to local labour both for skilled and non skilled jobs. Referring to the India-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ meet that decided to reopen Kargil-Skardu traditional road, Bukhari said that it has been more than a year now when it was decided by the two countries to start a bus service on this road but unfortunately the decision is yet to be implemented on the ground. Speaking on the occasion, Naeem Akhter, PDP chief spokesperson observed that Kargil has not been exploited in last many decades for its vast tourism potential. He said Kargil was one of those areas which had tremendous potential for growth but had remained backward as a result of the political apathy of those who had been elected on their vote. “The only time the district voted for the party other than the NC in many decades was in 2002. It was then that the hill development council was created and empowered for carrying on the developmental tasks. The PDP also restored sense of security among the people of Kargil who otherwise would remain in safer houses, trenches and other shelters because of continuous shelling on the border. But by a longest surviving ceasefire in 2003 PDP was successful in restoring peace in the region,” he added. He said it was unfortunate that the present government has reversed the process of empowerment of this backward district with the result the development process has come to a standstill. Akhter also stressed on opening up of all weather Kargil-Skardu route terming it a jugular of intra-regional trade on which the local economy was heavily dependent. |
