Cancer patients return without chemotherapy | Negligence takes toll of vital machine at RCC | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 24: Around seventy cancer patients who had come to the Government Medical College's (GMC) Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) for chemotherapy had to return disappointed as a vital machine had broken down due to official’s neglect. According to reports, the authorities ignored a technical snag in Theratron Phoenix 102 Cobalt 60 Teletherapy unit lead to further break down of the vital machine today and subjected the patients to inconvenience. Following this break down the radio therapy unit had to be closed down and the patients who were assembled in the hospital were asked to go back home empty handed. Official records suggest that a private company had informed the authorities about the snag. However, it was ignored for unknown reasons. The Company, records reveal had also submitted a quotation @ Rs 2,24,592 for the spare part needed for setting the vital machine right. Records further reveal that an engineer during inspection found the machine running directly on main supply without servo voltage stabilizer. Finally when the stabilizer arrived, the machine did not work, records show. Since no action to rectify the wrong was taken, two electronic cards got damaged. The service engineer, it was reliably learnt had prepared an estimate of Rs. 5.5 to 6 lakhs approximately to rectify the snag. But the authorities ignored him. The Incharge Principal Professor Aniece Chowdhary expressed his inability to give an assurance in writing the repair bills would be cleared in stipulated time period. The machine breaks down and caused chaos in the hospital with the patients and their attendants seeking explanations from the staff. The poor patients may have to wait for a week or so till the machine is set right. They accused the hospital authorities and the head of the department Prof Ashutosh Gupta of sleeping over the matter for too long. |
