In changed Kashmir, separatists oppose political killings | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Sept 24: Times have changed and so has the stand of separatists on political killings. In early 90s when political activists were killed for professing a particular ideology, the separatists remained tight lipped. But, the recent killing of panchayat members has evoked strong reaction from the separatist camp. The Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani while addressing a press conference after the killing of a Sarpanch at Palhalan (Pattan) in Baramulla district expressed serious reservations over such killings, he said. He said: "We are against the killings based on the political ideology. Anyone who is responsible for Sarpanch killings shall be punished. We consider pro-India politicians, including Panches and Sarpanches, as enemies of the nation, but we are capable of confronting them politically," he added. Geelani's statement evoked appreciation from National Conference (NC) and other quarters as well. Senior NC leader, Dr Mehboob Beg hailed Geelani for deploring the killing of Panchayat representatives. "I wholeheartedly appreciate Geelani Sahab for condemning the killing of Panchayat members," said Beg while addressing a gathering in Dialgam village of South Kashmir district Anantnag. He also hailed him for stating that no one should be killed on the basis of political ideology. While the elderly leader was not available to comment on the killings in 90s, his associate said: "All leaders including Geelani were taken into custody as soon as militancy gained momentum. Had the authorities spared them, the situation would have been different today." He said while it was difficult to talk on behalf of other leaders, Geelani (sahib) would have definitely taken a stand on the killings. "Geelani sahib believes in Islamic teachings. Islam does not allow such killings", he said. Pertinent to mention hundreds of NC and Congress activists got killed in early phases of on-going insurgency in Kashmir. Every day hundreds of political activists owing allegiance to pro-Indian political parties would resign from their respective parties and their resignations could be seen in local dailies. |
