| Omar forced to concede Soz's demand by Cong high command | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, forced to postpone BDC elections, was categorically told by Cong high command on Sunday that he has to deal and sort out the issues of confrontation with the PCC president Saif-ud-din Soz. According to sources, Omar in an effort to convince the Cong high command to go back from its stand on pressing for SC/ST reservation in Block Development Council, had held a meeting with Cong high command in Delhi on Sunday. The Congress high command didn't make any commitment on it. On Monday when Omar had again gone to Delhi, to attend the function, a message was dropped to him that he had to deal and sort to issue with the Soz, who party high command said is the point person of the party in the State and will take a final call. The message send clear signal to Omar that he had to eat his words that BDC election, scheduled to be held on Nov 7, had not only to be cancelled but the entire process had to be started again. Feeling the heat of the urgency of the matter, as Oct 17 the last date for filing nominations was fast closing in, Omar called a hurried Cabinet meeting. In fact most of the Ministers received the message of meeting scheduled to be held on 6.30 pm on Monday evening only at 6 pm. Some of the Ministers, who had no prior information, and were attending functions at different places, were immediately called for meeting where the only agenda fixed was to discuss ways and means of deferring elections and also to bring in ordinance for giving reservations to the SC/ST and Women in second tier of Panchayti Raj system. Omar Adullah was hoping that his personal equation with Cong general secretary Rahul Gandhi, whose message on reservations in BDC was wrongly interpreted and twisted at Srinagar, could help in having his final word. But being a pan-Indian party and already feeling heat of coalition partners, Cong told him categorically that he has to follow the coalition dharma and mustn't scoff off at political aspirations of a bigger coalition partner. The decision to defer polls for which he had earlier made a statement had definitely lowered his image as CM. It has also made him realize the politics of coalition in a hard manner. "He was groomed and acting in a feudal manner and used to have final word on every decision. It worked well with in the NC but little did he realize that itsn't the NC alone which is ruling the State. Had he accepted the point of Cong a little earlier, he wouldn't have been made to lick back his own words which he was forced to do latter," said a senior Cabinet Minister. |
