| Congress mum over Omar's indirect attack | | Statement on checking corruption..... | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 16: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is taking his grandfather, Sher-e-Kashmir especially as far as his dealing with Congress is concerned. He called the Congress workers `worms of gutter' and called for their social boycott in early 70s. The boycott was strictly enforced so much so that they (Congress men) could not get even four persons to take their dead to the graveyard. But then things changed and the Congressmen suddenly became revered for him. In 1975, he assumed power with their support. However, the honeymoon did not last long and Sher-e-Kashmir was yet again `ditched by his worst enemy'. People close to the Sheikh family believe that Sher-e-Kashmir had lashed out at Indira Gandhi in his Aatish-e-Chinar (Autobiography). However, the pages were expunged from the book at the instructions of Mader-e-Meherbaan, Begum Akber Jehan and Dr Farooq Abdullah for political reasons. Mustafa Kamaal gave Congress right and left last year. He was relieved of his post. In one of his statements, he held his nephew, Omar Abdullah responsible for his `stripping'. That time, political experts say Omar was worried for his extension and ensured smooth relations with the Congress. Today the situation is different. Omar has to give Education to Peerzada and R&B to Saroori shortly. Both of these Ministers were not relieved of their portfolios for political reasons or inefficiency. They lost their portfolios for misusing their official position. Omar, it is believed is upset over the decision of deferring the BDC elections. The Congress took a stand and made its partner (NC) to accept incorporating at least some provisions of the 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution. The said amendment guarantees empowerment of panchayats. Realizing that annoying Congress at this point of time was not desirable he launched an indirect attack. But they (Congressmen) must have taken Omar's recent statement with a pinch of salt. Yesterday he said it was difficult to check corruption in a dispensation run by a coalition. Omar obviously was referring to Congressmen. He cannot accuse his own workers of indulging in corrupt practices. The Congress has not reacted officially to the statement yet. What happens in the coming days remains to be seen? |
