| Post cancellation of BDC polls, coalition on rocks....! | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 16: Notwithstanding the ostensible posturing from both sides of alliance partners NC and Congress post developments related to BDC polls postponement that the ties are quite smooth and they are capable of pulling on the chariots of governance , the coalition it appears is on rock now. The die hard approach and firm stand on the issue by Congress is actually seen as the subtle way of confrontation and the first step in direction of establishing their position in the 'steering wheel'. Sources said post sudden announcement of deferment of BDC polls, entire hierarchy of NC and its cadres down the line are quite demoralized , not entirely for the reason of polls getting postponed but the way its leadership was made to surrender and bend before Congress stand. Demoralization is also on account of the fact that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, party's top leaders and senior Ministers Ali Mohammad Sagar and AR Rather had until few days back completely ruled out incorporating the provisions under 73rd Constitutional amendment , a demand its alliance partner had been consistently raising. Sources said following announcement of BDC polls schedule early this month NC had expedited preparedness in both the regions and at some places the leadership was of complete and assured success on a number of blocks. The deferment as also the mandatory move to incorporate changes with respect to reservations for SC, ST and women has dealt a blow to the status of preparations of the party and left the cadres , functionaries demoralized. This development has further created a wedge and distance between the two alliance partners which were already ripping apart on a host of other issues. Sources, however, attribute it to the merging fact the nerve of which NC has also begun to feel well that Congress has started asserting its position as equal partner and this time round would not look back or show any laxity , no matter its assertion has begun on and under the pretext of the empowerment of Panchayats. Sources also said the Congress leadership's assertion is essentially for a couple of reasons and the moves which have been pending for a long time, much to disadvantage of the party. It would now push the matter of reshuffle and expansion of the Cabinet under which the party wants to effect change of faces to refurbish its image and mainly to get rid of the dent in its credibility which has been badly damaged by NC's persistent domination in matters of governance. Sources also said there is a section in New Delhi which asserts that Congress can and should take a lead role in the coalition and if NC tends to pose hurdles , the party must and in changed political environment it is capable of taking recourse of other political 'options'.
