| Rise of regional parties not good for country: Omar | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who himself heads a regional party said the emergence of regional parties doesn't bode well for the country. In an interview to an international paper Omar said: It's not a trend bodes well for the country. Like it or not this country has done better when we had a stable and stronger Government at the Centre." Omar statement assumes importance as these are not only straight forward but also reflects the political reality and uncertainties facing the nation forcing the Centre to hold back certain important and key decisions thus hampering the economic growth. Omar had said in the interview that worst Central Governments have been made regional parties. Chief Minister heading a NC is in coalition with the Cong, heading the Centre, has faced problems with the Mamata Banerjee headed TMC, which had just pulled off the support to Cong leaving it on the oxygen of the SP and BSP. Omar is not the only politician of the State who had expressed concern over the rise of regional parties believing that it could work against the strong Centre. Cabinet Minister GH Mir had also stated in the past that regional parties are not in the interest of the nation. Omar's remarks does sound in variance with the political mooring and ideology of the NC which had carved out a political space in the State and on this strength has tried to get its way with the Centre, which though did cost politically both the Centre and the State. The Chief Minister by this statement did try to send a message to the political establishment in New Delhi that supporting and accepting PDP as an alternative mayn't be in its interest as PDP. However, his word may sound music to the ears of the Cong which is passing through choppy political waters and is making an appeal to the voters to give it clear verdict in the next general elections. Omar Abdullah had also recently said that coalition Government can't stop corruption as there are political compulsion and only strong one party rule can make strong decision in the interest of the either Centre or State. |
