Of local body elections and 7 suspended MLAS
10/31/2012 11:47:43 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 31: The delay in holding local body elections, political experts say should not be perceived in isolation. It, according to them, is an issue where all the major parties are stake holders. It is closely connected to the fate of the seven suspended MLAs of the BJP.
The suspended MLAs have missed three sessions of the Legislative Assembly. To put it plainly they have not contributed anything to the state ever since their suspension for cross voting in Legislative Council elections held last year. The Speaker did not take a decision for purely political reasons. If the suspended MLAS are expelled from the membership of the assembly, by-elections in the constituencies represented by them become due. In the current
scenario, the chances of BJP in these constituencies seem quite bleak.
The National Conference cannot even dream of winning a single seat in the by-elections. The major beneficiary would be the Congress-something which NC cannot afford at this point of time.
The by-elections may also impact the local body elections. If local body elections are held now, the mode of the people will come to fore.
It may be `dreadful' for the National Conference. It seems, the NC is not ready for the shock yet.
Pertinent to mention the local body elections were due two years ago. The government had plans to hold the elections in April this year. However, till date the much needed notification has not been issued. Even delimitation has not been done. According to Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mahbooba Mufti new colonies in Jammu have not been considered for inclusion in the Jammu Municipality.
Aware of the gravity of the problem, the BJP is seriously considering revoking the suspension of the seven MLAs. The state leaders, it has been reliably learnt, have brought the matter to the notice of the central leadership. The leaders in Delhi have been apprised of the dangers arising out of keeping the suspended MLAs out of the party fold for long. A decision on the issue may come in the coming days. The MLAs have also shown interest in home coming. Their leader, Chaman Lal Gupta has ruled out forming a new party or changing loyalties. He recently expressed his `love' for the BJP.
