| Temples of learning or seminaries for separatism? | | | early times report Srinagar, Oct 31: Kashmir has always been a free for all situation where anyone can lambast the country and yet continue to be paid by it to do his anti-national duties! Professors of various universities in the Valley have been attending seminars, workshops, debates and enclaves to speak against the integrity and sovereignty of the country and get away with it most conveniently. Even the mandatory respect to the national anthem is overlooked and often done so with disrespectful mockery. Kashmir University has seen some very high profile VVIP visits during the last few months. The first VVIP to arrive was the Vice President, Hamid Ansari, this was followed by the arrival of the President, Pranab Mukherjee who delivered the address at the 18th convocation of the University. Then came Rahul Gandhi. The State governor, N.N. Vohra and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah who are the University's chancellor and Pro-chancellor respectively have been visiting Kashmir University, SKUAST-K and the Awantipore Islamic University on a regular basis. When the country's national anthem is played at functions being attended by the State governor at the universities in the Valley many among the audience consciously and deliberately show their disrespect by not standing up as is mandatory during the recital of the national anthem. During seminars on human rights and during those with political overtones, the faculty members of the universities in the Valley engage in malicious campaigns against India. From every imaginable angle, the country is targeted. Not that the so-called intellectual speakers and learned teachers of the universities should not criticize the country for the wrongdoings of some officials or politicians, but when the basic intention of such campaigns is to appease the separatists, the government has a duty to step in. It is strange that while antecedents are verified of those persons who get recruited as class IV employees in the government there are no such checks and balances on those getting recruited to the highest seats of learning in the state. How are persons appointed as faculty members and at other levels in the universities without taking any intelligence or security call on them? A lady teacher known for her separatist connections has been organizing many seminars and workshops in the Valley and inviting speakers from outside to orchestrate a campaign against India. If this trend is not checked immediately what India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru called the temples of learning would soon become seminaries for sowing the seeds of violence, anger and hatred against the country. |
