To outwit coalition PDP takes up subsidized
LPG cylinders issue with Centre
11/16/2012 10:25:41 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Nov 16: As the State Government failed in its responsibility to take up the case regarding enhancement of the subsidized LPG cylinders from six to 12 per family in the trouble -torn J&K state, the Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) taking the onus to itself has taken up the issue with Union Government. The issue regarding relaxing of cap on the subsidised LPG cylinders to J&K was raised by opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti with Union Minster of Petroleum Veerapan Moily in New Delhi.
Claimed that the Centre was actively considering to relax the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders for Jammu and Kashmir, PDP said that it took the issue with the Union Minister keeping the prevailing situation and problems faced by the people of this border state before him.
"Union Minister for petroleum Veerapa Moily said the Government of India was actively considering a raise in the cooking gas cylinder cap in case of Jammu and Kashmir," an official spokesperson said after party president Mehbooba Mufti called on Moily in New Delhi yesterday.
He claimed that Mehbooba pleaded with Moily that Jammu and Kashmir could not be treated at par with other states in view of harsh climatic conditions prevailing here and the fact that most of the population has to face sub zero temperatures for months together.
She said in absence of alternative sources of fuel, the cooking gas had become a tool of survival in the state, the spokesman added.
"The fact that most of the hydro power generated in the state went into the national energy pool made it all the more imperative that the cap of subsidised cylinders is raised at least to 12 cylinders per year," Mehbooba told the minister.
The PDP president also asked the minister to set up two additional LPG bottling plants for the Valley in North and South Kashmir.
The existing plants have failed to cater to the requirements fully which was cited as a reason for the irrational decision of south Kashmir being linked to Jammu for gas supply, she added.
Conveying her anguish to about the severe shortage of cooking gas in the state, Mehbooba asked Moily to speed up the process of opening more counters at block level. The spokesman said that PDP was satisfied with the response of the Union Minister and expressed the hope that soon the problem in the state will end and GOI will increase the subsidized quota for the state. It may be recalled that the State Government led by Omar Abdullah was also under constant pressure from the masses to get the LPG subsidized quota increased from six to nine cylinders per family per year. Though it too took the issue with Union Government failed to get a positive response from it.
The political analysts however feel that in case the Union Government increases the subsidized quota on the insistence of PDP will be a great setback to Omar Abdullah led coalition
