Sericulture Deptt sets targets, discusses achievements

Jammu, Nov 17: Annual Staff Meeting of Sericulture Development Department, Jammu was held today on at Conference Hall, Sericulture Complex, B.C. Road, Jammu under the chairmanship of Dhanbir Singh, Director of Sericulture, J& K. The meeting was called to review the achievements made during 2012-13 in respect of Silkworm Seed production, Cocoon Crop production, production of Tall Mulberry Plants and implementation of centrally sponsored schemes in all the sericulture circles/districts of the division.
During the current year, a quantity of 6,02,000 kgs. cocoon crop was produced in the division. It is the first time that during Autumn Rearing Season a quantity of 0.52 lakh cocoon crop was produced in Jammu Division against 0.35 lakh kgs. of last year.
Dhanbir Singh, Director, Sericulture Development Department, J&K welcomed the officers and staff and said that during the year 2012-13, the farmers of the division earned handsome remuneration on sale of their cocoon crop in the cocoon auction markets organized by the department. As against the income of Rs. 615.00 lacs of last year, the farmers earned an amount of Rs. 772 lakh during current year on sale of cocoon crop in open bidding. The average price per kg. of cocoon crop was recorded to Rs. 384/- per kgs. of cocoon crop as against Rs. 303 per kg. of cocoon crop of last year He told that the department is providing all the assistance to the farmers in shape of rearing kit, Assistance in shape of CGI sheets as roofing material for rearing house, Assistance for construction of rearing house costing Rs. 0.75 lakh and also provide disinfectants/ pesticides etc. All these inputs were provided to the farming community to enhance their rearing skill and rearing capacity to enhance cocoon crop production '. The Department is also provides improved varieties mulberry saplings to the faming community to transplant the same on their land holdings and utilize the foliage of the same during rearing of silkworms. In the meeting, the targets of 6.60 lacs kgs. cocoon crop production for the year 2013-14 for Jammu Division was fixed. Further, 10.50 lakh mulberry plants will be planted during Winter Season 2012-13 in all the districts of the division.
