| Will growing internal disturbances set stage for military rule in Pakistan ? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 24: Once again Pakistan is faced with an alarming internal security mess which may, if not handled properly, set the stage for the reimposition of military rule. And in view of the growing threat to the country's security as a result of sectarian clashes and stepup in the incidents of subversive violence triggered by terrorists of various hues the "troika", a name given to the President of Pakistan,Prime Minister, and the Army Chief, had a detailed interaction in Islamabad to work out a strategy that could defuse the crisis. Reports reaching here from across the LOC indicated that both the political and military leadership in Pakistan are worried over the disturbing law and order, especially kicked up by sectarian clashes and series of gun and grenade attacks in different parts of Pakistan. According to these reports, the level of security scare gripping the country during Muharram has been so much high that President Asif Ali Zardari met Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to take stock of internal security threats The presence of the three at the presidency has reminded many to recall the well-known term of troika - president, prime minister and the COAS - which was frequently used during the 90s. In view of an unprecedented rise in suicide bombings and other terrorist activities during Muharram, the meeting focused on internal security of the country. Initially President Zardari and General Kayani had a one-on-one meeting, which was later joined by the prime minister. According to a security experts, although General Kayani on had said there was no need for a military operation in Karachi, they must have discussed ways to bring normalcy back to the city. Since there had been no let-up in the incidents of targeted killings in the city and as calls were rising for a military operation in Karachi, the issue must have been taken up during the meeting. Reports said that as a result of spurt in sectarian violence and terrorist activities Pakistani Army may venture on kicking up border conflict with India in Jammu and Kashmir by resorting to intermittent ceasefire violattions and by pushing groups of militants into the border state. All this may be done to deviate peoples' attention from the gravity of the internal crisis in Pakistan. These events may push up the level of ingress of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. And what seems to worry the Indian security forces is the countrywide drive in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir for recruiting boys in Lashkar-i-Toiba outfit whose activists have been playing a dominant role in destabilising peace in Jammu and Kashmir.(EOM)
