Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Nov 30: Lack of doctors and infrastructure has adversely affected patient care in Kishtwar hospital. Long queues in the out patient department (OPD) have become a normal affair. The locals have sought adequate measures for `curing the ailing hospital.'
Data available with Early Times reveals that nearly two lakh patients from different parts of the district including Marwah, Warw-an, Dachhan, Chatroo, Pad-dar, Palmar, Drabshala, Bh-unzwah and Gandow, Bat-yas, Karra, and Thathri of Doda district visit the hospital annually.
Though the Hospital get District Hospital status in the year 2007 when Kishtwar got the District status, but the sanctioned strength of the staff is same as that of Sub District Hospital. The hospital gets supplies of medicines and funds as per the old schedule.
Insiders said that the hospital even finds it difficult to manage the status of sub district hospital since nearly 80 posts including B grade doctors, specialists and paramedical staffs are lying vacant. "Only one thing changes in functioning of District Hospital Kishtwar is that government appoints Medical Superintendent, nothing more than that-neither staff and doctor strengthen were enhanced nor the funds", said one of the hospital employee.

Besides lack of paramedical staff, hospital faces lot of problems in maintaining cleanliness. The newly constructed building presents a shabby look as heaps of garbage lie scattered around it.

The hospital was mainly run by staff engaged under hospital development funds. The location of the hospital also calls for more staff and funds. It is situated in an accident prone area but due to non-availability of staff and infrastructure, the accident victims are referred to GMC Jammu.

Even for minor cases, patients were sometime referred to Doda hospital. Not only the people of Kishtwar but inhabitants of bordering state Himachal Pradesh also find it easy to reach the hospital.

The rush of patients in District Hospital Kishtwar increases every year and this rush is expected to increase further once the work on upcoming power projects in Kishtwar district commences. There is also a dire need for construction of residential quarters for doctors. Lack of residential accommodation has also adversely affected the functioning of the hospital.
Keeping in view of increasing number of visiting patients at District Hospital Kishtwar, there is need for having a comprehensive plan to overcome the impediments.

Many people in Kishtwar district believe that difference between two factions of Congress was the main cause of worse condition of health infrastructure in Kishtwar.

Kishtwar which is a part of Chenab valley is considered as hot bed of Azad led Congress group while the State Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma is loyal towards Soz group and thus the rift between the two Congress groups becomes the cause of suffering of people in Kishtwar.

General masses of the area sought immediate intervention of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to set things right in the hospital.
