| Favouritism in selections puts question mark on SKIMS credibility | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 30: The favouritism, nepotism and undue interference by higher ups has ruined the post graduate and post doctorate trainings in Kashmir's lone super-speciality hospital Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences. Sources told Early Times that post graduate and post doctorate trainings in the SKIMS were at its worst ever since the new Dean Dr. Khurshid Iqbal was entrusted the job of chairman Medicine and allied departments as well as Surgery. "In the process the powers and responsibilities of chairpersons in their departments were taken away making mess of the Institute. Both Director SKIMS Dr Showkat Zargar and the new Dean are busy in divisive politics by wrongly projecting the second-run line of faculty in vital areas of patient care," they alleged. A senior medico said that promoting indiscipline and disappointment is ultimately brewing the seeds for brain-drain from the institute. "Unfortunately the government apathy towards this only prestigious hospital is telling upon its health that needs reckoning so that the people concerned come out of the deep slumber before it is too late," he warned. An RTI application has revealed that SKIMS had issued a "fraudulent selection list" and made the selection of otherwise ineligible candidates in various courses for DM-M Ch while dropping the genuine candidates. Ironically, the authorities had asked the dropped candidates to appear in the practical part of entrance examination, when the candidates who were selected in "fraudulent selection list" had already joined the courses. After the SKIMS authorities blatantly denied that there was any unfair selection of the candidates, some aggrieved doctors filed an RTI application in which they sought detailed information about the entire process of the selections from the Dean Academics SKIMS. The Dean in his reply gave a contradictory reply to their selection list issued earlier. Thus the SKIMS authorities admitted that the earlier selection list was issued had many flaws and several genuine and eligible candidates were dropped for no fault of theirs. This puts a huge question mark over the credibility of the SKIMS and the indifference shown by the authorities. Pertinently last year, charges of favouritism and nepotism in conducting practical examinations for the selection of post-doctorial courses of DM and M.Ch had surfaced when the selection of Dr. Abid Showkat, who happens to be the son of Director SKIMS had raised many eyebrows. While Dr Zargar had then denied charges of favouritism and nepotism in conducting practical examinations for the selection of post-doctorial courses of DM and M.Ch, the RTI revelation now proves that the rules do get flouted at the SKIMS.
