| Will NC leadership opt for early Assembly poll in J&K? | | | early times report Jammu, Dec 10 : The PDP leadership has set its eyes on the next Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir because it believes that the ruling coalition may favour early poll. Senior PDP leaders are of the opinion that though the NC and the Congress displayed cooperation and coordination during the recent election to the four Legislative council seats the unity was skin deep and the NC leadership could ditch the congress whenever it finds doing so convenient for the party. Number of PDP leaders, including Nizam-ud-Din Bhat,Mohd.Dilawar Mir were of the opinion that the win of the ruling coalition candidates in the council election was not an index to the next Assembly election. They said that just about 30,000 votes of Panches and sarpanches for the four council seats was not even a fraction of the total voter strength of over 63 lakhs. In reply to a question the PDP leaders said that in various areas members of the Panchayat committees wer forced to vote in favour of the ruling coalition candidates after they had received indirect threats from the BDOs and other district officials. The PDP leaders said that the only reason for the ruling coalition to favour early Assembly election was its success in the council election but the top NC leadership is not still sure about its success because of the brewing internal conflict and as a result of its strained ties with the Congress in the state. As such the issue of holding early Assembly election was still open for discussion because the Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, and the Union Minister,Farooq Abdullah, do not want to lose power before 2014. Bhat said whether the state will go in for early election or not the PDP is right now ready to measure muscles with the National Conference. He said that the PDP was engaged in keeping its man power ready so that NC leaders were not able to resort to malpractices, for which they are known for, during the next Assembly poll.
