Early Times Report
jammu, Dec 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah might have publically expressed his willingness to contest the 2014 Assembly election in alliance with Congress party, the grass root workers and leaders of State unit of Congress are not enthusiastic over such an alliance.
Congress leaders and workers feel that having pre-poll alliance with NC will harm the interest of party and will be disastrous for the State as whole. They feel that if past experiences are any indication, Congress should contest the 2014 Assembly elections on its own. However, these leaders feel that final decision must be taken by the high command keeping the sentiments of the party workers in mind.
"Past experiences suggest that having pre-poll alliance with NC will be disastrous for both parties as well as State. We must go alone in the elections and the decision must be taken after wide consultation," said a senior Congress leader.
During the campaigning for four seats of Legislative Council, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had hinted that NC and Congress may go together in the 2014 Assembly elections but it was rebutted by senior Congress Minister and few party leaders who had said that high command will take the final decision.
Now, few more voices from within Congress party are rising against the pre-poll alliance with NC, who feel that party must not make any such commitment at this stage.
The Congress leaders believe that the party has better chance of getting more than 30 seats in the 2014 Assembly elections and if pre-poll alliance is made with NC, the party would face electoral losses.
"The recent MLC election has suggested that Congress is gaining in both Jammu and in Valley and working hard in upcoming two years Congress party may not need alliances to form Government in the State," he added.
Going by the statistics, it has been observed that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has lost ground in Jammu region which it gained during the 2008 Assembly elections in the backdrop of Amarnath land row and now Congress is emerging as a clear gainer. Forming pre-poll alliance with NC will force Congress party to share seats which party can do better contesting on its own.
"It is clear that Congress could turn its fortune in the 2014 Assembly election if it works hard and fields genuine candidates. We could win maximum seats and turn up as the single largest party but if pre-poll alliance is formed, party interests will be hurt and we will lose ground," the Congress leader said, adding that they have best chance to gain power without any support.
The Congress leader said that high command should hold wide consultation within party leaders in the State and take right decision.
