Obnoxious Comments

Jammu, Dec 27: The entire nation is feeling outraged over the Delhi gang-rape of a 23 year old girl and praying for her recovery. Delhi has been witnessing massive protests and sit-in since December 16, when this girl was subjected to barbarity of an extreme form. She was raped and dumped. Last night she was shifted to Singapore for treatment as her condition further deteriorated. Hundreds of protestors, both boys and girls, have suffered injuries during the protests but the police brutalities and extreme weather condition have failed to dampen their spirit. They are so determined to change the system. Even today, hundreds of protestors, including men and women, took part in the protest march organized to force the authorities to sack Delhi Police Commissioner who, they believe, like the UPA Government, is equally responsible for the fast-deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital, particularly as far as the safety and security of women and school, college, university and office going girls is concerned. They were also demanding special session of the Parliament to discuss the situation arising out of spurt in rape cases in Delhi and elsewhere in the country, fast-track courts to try rapists and capital punishment for rapists.
And at such a critical time no less than Congress MP from West Bengal and son of President Pranab Mukherjee, Abhijeet Mukherjee, abused, ridiculed and mocked the protesting womenfolk. He shamelessly displayed his perverted mindset and made obnoxious comments on women. In an interview to ABP Ananda, he said the "women protesting in the (Delhi) protests were pretty women who were dented and painted" and added that "this is almost like a Pink revolution" and that "these women who are protesting have no contact with ground reality". "These pretty women, dented and painted, who come for protests are not students. I have seen them speaking on television, usually women of this age are not students," he said in Bengali. He did not stop just there. He went on to say that "students, who go to discotheques, think it is a fashion statement to hold candles and protest". In fact, he said that the "dented and painted" women take part in candle marches in the evening and go to discos and pubs thereafter.
Did he not display his perverted mindset and contempt for the women folk? He did. He not only abused and insulted the protesting in Delhi, but womenfolk across the country, who have been praying for the life of rape victim since December 16. Indeed, Abhijeet committed an unpardonable crime against women who have been struggling for a secure life braving all odds. It was no wonder then that his perverted remarks evoked very strong reactions from women organizations, social activities and political parties like the BJP, Trinamool Congress and the CPI-M. They denounced Mukherjee and demanded a public apology for making "extremely obnoxious comments". As for protesting women, they condemned Mukherjee saying he only said what he actually believed in and also demanded an apology from him. They said that what Mukherjee said was an attack on the entire women population of the country and that such persons have no right to hold any public office. Significantly, his own sister tore into him and said she did not share her brother's views. In fact, she asked him to tender an apology.
The media also grilled him. Convinced that his comments have triggered a fierce controversy, he tendered apology saying he never wanted to hurt the women's sensitivities. "I apology if my comments hurt the womenfolk," he told several private TV news channels.
