| Fearing extinction, Kashmiri Hindus advocate three-child norm | | Countering Genocidal Destabilisation | | NEHA
JAMMU, Dec 29: Fearing extinction of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus inhabiting different parts of the country, the political organization of internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus, Panun Kashmir (PK), yesterday not only took on the "weak", "irresponsible" and "ambivalent" Indian State for its failure to protect the minorities in the state, including the Kashmiri Hindus, and demanded creation of a separate homeland for the community in the Valley, but also adopted a comprehensive resolution on the need to have more children so that they are able to "maintain and perpetuate their demography". The resolution was adopted at the national convention held in Jammu to discuss the problems facing the community and solutions which could help the community to surmount them. "The ruthless and genocidal destabilisation has been of catastrophic implications for the demography of Kashmiri Hindus. In exile maintaining and perpetuating our demography is a prime task for all of us. Our own responsibility in creating a growth rate which can arrest the trend of dwindling numbers in our stock is a prime responsibility for all of us. We have to realize that one-child norm is taking us to a negative growth trend which is so steep that the specter of extinction does not look impossibility. Even a two-child norm per family doesn't take us out from the vicious negative growth curve. Our family planning has to undergo a revolutionary change if we have to escape from silent destruction. This silent destruction will be our own creation. It will be a self-inflicted suicide," the resolution said. The resolution - apart from holding the forced exodus of the community responsible for dwindling growth rate - also blamed the community for the dwindling number in its stock. "It is not just the one-child norm but also the delayed marriages and delayed child bearing which plays havoc with our numbers. Intriguingly, the more self-reliant and self-sustained families amongst us are complicit in this crime of self-annihilation more than anybody else. The parents have a prime responsibility in educating their children about the dimensions of this self-destruction," it said. The operative part of the resolution read: "To recognize a three-child norm as a minimum imperative necessity for a family so that we are able to sustain our numbers and to not evaporate into extinction. To recognise that we marry our children at an age at least five years ahead of the present average norm. To honour and respect those who have more children". The PK leadership and hundreds of its activists who took part in the convention just cannot be questioned for their resolve to have more children. In fact, they deserve appreciation for their realisation that the time has come to take remedial measures aimed at averting the impending disaster. Indeed, it has become imperative for the community to counter what the national convention called genocidal desta-bilisation by adopting a minimum three-child norm. |
