Heavy snowfall adds woes to people of valley

Srinagar, Dec 29: As Kashmir valley received the season's heavy snowfall in upper reaches, the snow choked roads and power outages reported from various District headquarters of the valley are adding more woes to the people of valley particularly in far remote areas.
Snowfall in the upper reaches is continue from last 24 hours and according to the reports upper reaches of District Kulgam like Aharbal and tangmarg received more than three feet, Mughal road, Sedow and Heerpora in District Shopian received three feet and upper reaches of District Pulwama and Budgam like Pakherpora, Khansahib and Yusmarg received two feet of fresh snowfall, famous health resort Gulmarg received 15 inchs of fresh snowfall.
According to the reports received from these areas no electricity was seen from last 15 hours and snow clearance machines could not reach to the upper reaches of these areas. The college students who were supposed to appear in exams for graduation could not reach on time and many of them belonging to far flung areas said that many of them missed their exams because of no transport available on the roads.
Meanwhile In view of fresh snowfall in upper reaches of the Valley, a medium range avalanche warning has been issued for the areas namely Tangdhar, Chowkibal, Keran, Machil, Gurez, Tuleil, Sonamarg, Drass and in upper reaches of Uri and Gulmarg in next 24 hours.
Meanwhile Srinagar-Jammu Highway which was opened to clear stranded vehicles at different places on the road was later closed for night hours after fresh snowfall on Saturday was reported.
Around two feet of snow accumulated around the tunnel in Qazigund area during the night, Aamir Ali, coordinator of Natural Disaster Management Cell, told media persons.
However, he said vehicles stranded on either side of the Tunnel were allowed to move this afternoon after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the highway.
"Only stranded vehicles are allowed to move to reach their destinations," he said, adding that if the weather permits, the highway will be reopened for traffic tomorrow.
He also said no civil flight could operate from Srinagar airport so far due to "poor visibility." "Four flights have been cancelled due to bad weather till 2:20 PM," an airport spokesman said.
