| Kamaal attacks Cong for supporting AFSPA | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 4: National Conference (NC) additional general secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal has accused Congress of supporting continuation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir to give a free hand to Indian Army. He said this power can be misused and the same was done in 2002 and 2008. He said there is absolutely no justification in continuing with AFSPA in the State. Kamaal, it seems, has not learnt any lesson from his `misadventures' in Kishtwar last year where he said India was an enemy of people of Kashmir for having rejected Pakistan's no war pact. The statement evoked wide spread condemnation. Kamaal was forced to give an explanation. He said India was in his DNA. However, the explanation was not accepted and Kamaal had to eat a humble pie. Kamaal made the recent statement at Parade Ground during Christmas and New Year celebrations. He said NC was keen to get AFSPA repealed but was facing stiff opposition from various quarters including the Army. He said Army had been misusing the legislation which according to Kamaal was draconian. Kamaal said the Congress also opposed AFSPA with the hope of fearing well in the forthcoming elections in the State. The Congress Party, Kamaal said, is under a mistaken notion that the Army would rush to help them on a phone call. Batting for Pakistani cricketer, Javed Miandad, Kamaal said dragging his name in a controversy was most unfortunate. He said people should not be linked with those involved in heinous crimes. Kamaal warned political parties against playing politics on the medical aid to the acid attack victim. |
