JU lacks internet facility
1/4/2013 11:50:34 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 4: Although colleges in 21st century are providing internet facility to students, the Jammu University still is not providing proper internet connections and fully equipped computer labs to them.
This is leading to the chaos in many departments of the varsity where due to the lack of internet facility students are facing problem to get the first hand account of researches from all over world. These students have to turn towards cyber cafes, which for some are not affordable due to the high rates.
Sources in the University said that the computer laboratories were established in 2008 during the tenure of former JU Vice Chancellor Professor Amitabh Matoo but have not been given attention after his departure from the university.
"There is a computer lab in our department but it seems that it is defunct as out of five computers only two are functional for students whose number is more that hundred in the department,'" said a student. The law school students also have alleged that the computer lab in their department has been closed for their entire second semester. They said that they had paid huge sum of money for their admissions and the department is lacking necessary infrastructure like internet which in present time has become a necessity.
"We have paid more than Rs 30,000 as fees to the university which was much more than written in the university prospectus which was lesser than Rs 20,000. It was only for the first month that we were given the chance to use this facility and since then the lab is locked where about 12 computers are kept idle," said a LLB student. It is not only that the departments are not allowing the students but the junior students also cannot use it due to seniority of these students.
"In our department scholars all the time are busy with facebook chat and do not allow us to check even if we are in need to check some information and other things. They have this privilege as they deserve it. Our chance is being exploited only because there are very few systems in the department," said another student from department of Botany.
The university, though claiming that they are doing good in all fields, but remains still at the back even after a decade of 21st century has passed. It has been observed that JU students might have to wait for another few years to get access to internet connectivity easily.
