| Apex Committee for migrants in jeopardy | | 2 members resign, more to follow | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 4: With two members of the Apex Committee for migrants having resigned, the fate of the body seems to be in jeopardy. More resignations are expected in the coming days. The migrants were aghast over the decisions taken by the Apex Committee in Srinagar during a meeting with the Chief Minister. The decisions taken by the committee have not gone well with the migrants especially the youth. The youth stormed the Relief Commissioner's office last month where some members of the Apex Committee were discussing the fall out of the decisions taken in the Srinagar meeting. One member was also manhandled. The youth told them in clear terms to justify the decisions or face the consequences. The Committee had decided to stop relief benefits to such families whose any member was appointed under Prime Minister's package in the Valley. The Relief Commissioner stopped the relief to such families. The decision of the Relief Commissioner affected the elderly people in particular. Some of them are at the verge of starvation. They have now sought judicial intervention. The second decision was about the construction of shops at Jagti under self financing scheme where as the earlier decision taken by Raman Bhalla Minister incharge was that the shops shall be constructed by Department. On this the shopkeepers were angry with the members of Apex Committee and have questioned their wisdom for taking such a decision. The third controversial decision is about the return of employees of Health Department. Aghast over the decisions, the migrants have asked the Apex Members either to get the decisions amended/withdrawn or face the consequences. Members contacted by Early Times denied having taken such decisions. They said the minutes of the meeting have not been recorded properly. Some of them accused vested interests for creating a wedge between the migrants and the Government. They also said that from the date present Revenue Secretary and Relief Commissioner have joined they have always tried to create problems instead of solving the problems of migrants. They referred to some controversial issues like employment package, allotment of quarters at Jagti, issuance of certificates, using services of outsiders for handling official papers, shielding of corrupt officials etc. The migrant leaders like HL Chatta and PL Raina have already resigned from the membership of Apex Committee and more are expected to follow in coming week. Chatta said they have not taken the decisions because they did not have the mandate for the same. They said the issue will be taken up with the Chief Minister for fixing responsibility for recording the minutes wrongly. Meanwhile, some members approached the Relief Commissioner who told them that he had no role in circulating and drafting of minutes and advised to submit their concerns in writing. |
