No respite from biting cold as temp drops further in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 4: Jammu and Kashmir got no respite from cold as the minimum temperature re-mained below the freezing point. Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season after the minimum dropped further and settled at minus 4.3 degrees Celsius.
People in Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum was between minus 14 degrees and minus 22 degrees with Kargil witnessing the coldest night so far with minus 16.2 degrees. A Met department spokesman said here that weather will remain mainly dry and cold over the state during the next 24 hours.
There would be no large change during the subsequent two days, he said. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir remained the coldest in the Valley as the minimum dipped further to minus 10.2 degrees, more than a notch less than yesterday. Pahalgam, a famed heath resort in south Kashmir, recorded minus seven degrees followed by Kokernag minus 5.4 degrees, Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir minus 4 degrees and Kupwara and minus 5 degrees. The spokesman said after two degrees above normal maximum temperature yesterday, the night was cold in Srinagar. He has forecast that the sky will remain partly cloudy tomorrow when the maximum will remain above normal but the minimum will remain below normal. Kargil, a border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway, in Ladakh region recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum dropped to minus 16.2 degrees. At Leh, the minimum temperature was minus 14.3 degrees, he said. However, in far flung and upper reaches the minimum was between minus 16 degrees and minus 22 degrees.
