| RDD lays strong edifice for Panchayat Raj | | Creates over one crore mandays of jobs for rural population | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 10 : Completion of historic Panchayat Elections in the State after over 30 years and transfer of powers to grass root democratic institutions from 14 departments were path breaking and remarkable achievements of the government during last four years aimed at empowering people and taking government out from the Secretariat to ground level. The election for the reserved seats for panchayats in Legislative Council was yet another important step towards the establishment of empowered Panchayati Raj in the State vowed by the coalition government. Besides this feather in its cap, the Rural Development Department made considerable dent in the implementation of poverty elevation schemes and creation of mandays of work for rural labours. During the last four years about one crore mandays were generated under MGNREGA in the State which resulted in the completion of over 1.73 lakh works of different nature aimed at creating rural infrastructure and universalizing basic amenities in villages. To register this achievement an amount of Rs. 1791 crores have been incurred and 10.5 lakh job cards distributed to the rural families to ensure 100 day job availability to them in rural areas. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah inaugurated 41 modern Panchayat Houses besides launching Panchayat Lok Adalats. The Chief Minister has also indicated that the provision of funds providing stipend to panchayat members and for their insurance would be made in the next year's budget. The government also sanctioned 1083 posts of Village Level Workers to pave the way for providing Panchayat Secretaries to all 4128 panchayats in the State. |
