NC leadership going sleepless; PDP, separatists gaining ground in Valley
1/11/2013 12:07:09 AM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 10: With opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) breaking strong bastions of National Conference (NC) in Kashmir valley, the leadership of NC is perturbed over growing popularity of PDP and worried about separatist jumping the fray.
Though PDP has become a headache for both NC and its alliance partner Congress, but the reported move of some factions of separatist organizations to contest the 2014 Assembly poll has given sleepless nights to NC leadership. According to sources, some top NC leaders during last few days have asked their party cadres to move into their constituencies and launch a door to door campaign in each and every mohalla apprising the people about the achievement of Omar Abdullah led Government.
One of the senior NC leader and a close confidante of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who had recently convened a meeting of some NC functionaries from Down Town Srinagar urged them to fan into the entire area and hold corner meetings with prominent people of the area apprising them of the pro-people policies and programmes undertaken by Omar Abdullah Government.
NC leader who represents one of the Constituencies from Down Town Srinagar in State Assembly has made it clear to party cadres that the Party means business and it has from today started the preparations for 2014 elections as these elections will be a prestigious issue for the Party.
Downplaying that NC was afraid of separatists joining the poll fray while a Party functionary asked the senior leader during the meeting, said that NC will not be cowed down by anybody as it has a long history and sacrifices to its credit and party wants to defeat the separatists through ballot as people of Kashmir have never endorsed their policies and programmes.
Sources said the NC leader also informed his cadres to apprise the people that how many development works took place in Down Town Srinagar and how many people got the Government jobs under various schemes launched by Omar Abdullah led Government during last four years of its rule.
The NC leader in association with other senior leaders later convened the meeting of die hard cadres of the Party and also intimated them about the party message. The leaders have made it clear to the cadres that though the elections to State Assembly are two years away now the Party cadres have to start preparations from today in view of the formidable challenge from PDP and separatists.
The Party's main concern to separatists joining the main stream is that like PDP they will also make inroads in its strong bastions in the Valley. The Party is already perturbed with the sudden growth of PDP which it calls a creation of the then NDA Government.
The PDP in last two elections has done a lot of damage to NC which in earlier elections right from 1977 after first election was held following Parthasarthy- Beig accord in 1975 did not allow its opponents to secure more than two seats in Kashmir valley. However, after coming into being in 2000, the PDP did a blow to NC by wresting more than half of Valley seats from it and challenging its political supremacy. Sources said the unprecedented growth of PDP has become a headache for the NC leadership who apprehend that if appropriate steps will not be taken from today the Party will face an awkward position in next Assembly poll.
