It's wake-up call for police brass

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 10: It is shocking but true that Jammu and Kashmir Police is grappling with a manpower crunch even as crime graph shows a sharp rise here in the State, which has also been on the terror radar for a long time now.
In past couple of months, be it Kashmir valley or Jammu Province, both parts of the State have witnessed numerous cases of accidents/fatal accidents, crimes including heinous cases of rape, attempt to rape and molestation.
If sources in Police Department are to be believed, the Jammu and Kashmir Police tasked with protecting the people still remain at least 60 percent short of the sanctioned strength, while crime graph including cases of road accidents and crime against women have risen in manifolds as compared to past few years annual data.
"Besides, the Traffic wing of the State Police is the worst hit, facing shortage by about 70 per cent," revealed reliable sources that further added that "as far as the Security wing of the police is concerned it is under stress because of ever growing demand from VIPs and senior political big wigs of different political parties as well as number of protected persons for a security cover. Those who have been provided with the security cover want more people to be deployed for the same".
Sources further disclosed that "whenever an exercise is being undertaken to reduce the size of the security cover people agitate. At least five to six thousand more men are required so that those crying for security cover could be provided with".
Furthermore shocking part of the prevailing crisis of manpower is that "the total of 193 Police Stations, including two Women Police Stations one each at Srinagar and Jammu and 158 Police Posts/Divisions in the State of J&K manned by Police personnel of the rank of Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables, Selection Grade Constables and Constables are facing acute shortage of manpower".
Sources further confirmed that "at almost every Police Station and Police Post established in different parts of the State are under-staffed. At some places the police are being maintained by 30 per cent out of the total sanctioned while at some Police Stations law and order is being maintained by 40 percent of the total strength sanctioned by the Home department."
"We are not super-natural waves. How one can expect standard policing controlling cases crimes like theft, burglaries, clashes, crime against women besides having a proper check on rashly driven vehicles. We require adequate manpower for patrolling. Besides, extra contingent of police are required to ensure incident free movements of VVIPs," shared a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.
"We understand and know our duties. We try are level best to ensure that respective jurisdictions remain crime free in the existing infrastructure presented to us. Burt even then crime occurs. It is up to Government to see and seriously review to urgent requirement of the State Police," expressed another senior police officer while speaking to Early Times on the condition of anonymity.
