| CPI(M ) opposes rail fare hike, demands rollback | | | early times report SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Slam-ming the central government for the hike in passenger rail fares, Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI(M) today said the "anti-people" decision is bound to further hit the common man already reeling under high inflation. "Instead of this anti-people decision, railways should have adopted other means to meet its revenue demands," state Secretary of CPI(M) M Y Tarigami said in a statement here. Tarigami expressed concern over the "contemptuous" rail fare hike decision and said "the Railway Ministry has shown utter disregard to the sanctity of the Parliament by announ-cing the fare hike just a month before the Railway Budget is to be placed before the august House." He said one fails to understand that when will the present dispensation in Delhi say "no to its anti-people policies". "Under the present union government, essential commodities have gone out of reach for the people. By raising price of diesel, cooking gas and now rail fare, UPA government has crossed the limits," the CPI(M) leader said. Demanding immediate rollback of railway fare, Tarigami said the hike will have a cascading effect on people, already burdened with price rise. On decisions presently under consideration of central government regarding hike in LPG, diesel prices, the CPI (M) leader said diesel is the main fuel for transportation and farming sectors and any increase in the fuel's price has a cascading effect on the cost of daily living. "The proposals of oil ministry that there should be Rs 3-4.50 hike per litre diesel, is strongly condemnable," he said. He said the proposed hike of LPG cylinder currently under consideration of the government is unwarranted. "The government might be citing ballooning deficits and rising debts behind its anti-people decisions but fact of the matter is that these explanations are not convincing enough for the people who have a challenge of running a household on an ever-tightening budget," Tarigami added. |
