| Omar has 'managed' to have loyalty of Ministers | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in first Cabinet reshuffle has tried to keep control of party and governance in his hand by making five NC MLAs as the first time Ministers. While this is a move while keeping constituency factors in mind for 2014, it is also being seen as a step to have their unflinching loyalty as well. Akbar Lone, Mir Saifullah, Sajjad Kitchloo, Nazir Gurezi and Feroz Ahmad Khan are first time Ministers. They have been MLAs earlier also but couldn't make it to the Ministry as NC was not in power from 2002 to 2008 and also earlier Dr Farooq Abdullah had his own men in the Cabinet. The chief minister had the plans of dropping even stalwarts but was advised against it by his farther Dr Farooq Abdullah, who is also the president of the party. According to media reports, few days before the Cabinet reshuffle, Omar had a tiff with his father during a function at New Delhi. The reports said, Omar brought down Farooq from the dais where he had jumped for dancing and singing. The incident created flutters in the party and even Ghulam Nabi Azad and Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, who were present there left embarrassed. This hardened the stand of Dr Farooq to scuttle Omar's move to loosen Farooq's grip over party and governance, sources said. However, Omar had sort of his way. By making the above named persons Ministers, he made them loyal to him rather than to his father. They will be more than eager to take his diktats rather than go to Dr Farooq Abdullah, sources said. The CM has thus ensured that he will have a clear hand in governance. It is reflected in the manner in which MOS has been given Independent Charge so that their decisions are not discussed in the Cabinet. The bigger move of Omar was to make Devinder Singh Rana and Nasir Aslam Wani as provincial presidents for Jammu and Kashmir regions. Both were key aides of him in the Government and now by giving them these posts he had ensured that all decision of the party are to be taken by him through them. In the given situation, these posts are important than Cabinet ministers. The State is going to elections next year and they will have a say in determining the candidature of a worker. However, this is where confrontation with party stalwarts will come in and this is what could damage prospects of Omar rather than helping him. |
